Gluten-Free Eating on the Road

September 8, 2011 – Some people find it hard to eat gluten-free at home – just imagine how hard it is for these same people to find good gluten-free options on the road.  However, eating gluten-free on the road isn’t as hard as one might think.  There are plenty of things that can be found at every stop if you just know where to look and what to look for.

Eggs are my absolute favorite thing to get at diners while traveling.  Many people wonder if eggs have gluten or not, and the answer is that they do not.  I usually get three scrambled eggs and a nice side of fruit, which is a delicious and satisfying meal while on the road.  Another great egg meal is a large omelet with a bunch of vegetables.  It can sometimes be hard to get your veggies on the road, so this is an easy way to get them.

Lunch and dinner is usually a little more tricky to get gluten free things to eat.  I love to stop at a steakhouse and either get a nice, mouth-watering steak or a skinless chicken breast with a side of broccoli or mashed potatoes.  Another thing you could eat is a cheeseburger without the bun.  A salad topped with salmon or chicken is always an option if you can’t find anything else that looks like it will suit the bill.

Now, my favorite snack to bring on the road is broccoli with Ranch and apple slices with peanut butter.  I also make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches with gluten-free bread.  It is so easy to get a cheap cooler to keep the snacks in.  Mixed nuts and potato chips are also good snacks to munch on.

Eating gluten-free on the road does not have to be boring.  Ask the chef what he can make that is gluten-free.  Chances are pretty high that he might be able to make some things that you wouldn’t normally think.
